Cutting Stock: Tenant of Culture

11 April - 11 May 2024
PEANA is excited to announce its participation in Condo Mexico City 2024, hosting Soft Opening, London with a solo exhibition by Tenant of Culture. Condo is a large-scale collaborative exhibition of international galleries founded by Vanessa Carlos in 2016. The initiative encourages the evaluation of existing models, pooling resources and acting communally to propose an environment that is more conducive for experimental gallery exhibitions to take place internationally. For its 2024 edition, 40 galleries will collaboratively exhibit across 20 Mexico City Spaces.

By disassembling and rebuilding manufactured garments, Tenant of Culture examines where ideological, political or cultural perspectives materialize in the production and marketing of apparel. The artist seeks materials sourced from various stages of the garment cycle that relate to recent trends in fashion and their socio-political histories. The mutated former wearables exist between sculpture and product, strangely familiar to everyday articles of dress. The presentation examines the strategic codification of visual languages and techniques in luxury commodity production that obscure or expose dynamics of power, domination and assertion of class via a constant re-/de- valuation of goods.
